FAQs - You asked and we answered

Bryte

Why are you called Bryte?

Our name represents the brightness we hope you’ll find in our coffee, and the brightness we hope our coffee brings to your day.

Where are you based?

We are located in the picturesque village of Boarhills, found just a few minutes drive along the coast from St Andrews, Scotland.

Coffee

Where does your coffee come from?

To source our coffee, we work with ethical, transparent and independent sourcing partners, based all over the world - check out who we work with on our coffee pages.

What are single origin coffees?

We only sell single origin coffees, which can be traced to a single region in a single country. Where beans from different origins are mixed together, a Blend is created. Whilst we love to drink a beautifully constructed Blend, we don't have a plan to make and sell these just yet.

Roasting

How is your coffee roasted?

Always light - this is our preference based on how we like to roast coffee and how we like to drink it. Within this, we often roast our Mellow and Decaf coffees a little less light, and our Vibrant and Wild coffees a little more light - this helps the former work better with milk and milk-alternatives.

Does your coffee have the same caffeine content as darker roasts?

Yes! Although it’s sometimes thought that light roast coffee doesn’t offer the same caffeine-kick as a darker roast - this isn’t true! In fact, light roast coffee has the same amount of caffeine as any other type of roast … other than decafs and low caffs, of course!

Grinding

Can you grind the coffee before it’s shipped?

Yes, we can! Although we recommend buying beans and grinding at home, we know that it can be really helpful to have your coffee pre-ground. We grind 100g and 250g orders for mokapot, AeroPress, pour over and cafetière. Coffee begins to oxidise and degrade once ground; so, to help keep it fresh, we recommend decanting your order into an airtight container as soon as possible.

Resting

Why is Bryte coffee best enjoyed 1 to 4 weeks after roasting?

Coffee, especially light roast coffee, needs to rest after roasting in order to release trapped carbon dioxide. This process is called degassing, and it leads to better extraction and consistency when brewing. Most importantly, allowing coffee to degas for at least a week (and preferably more!) results in a vastly improved depth and complexity of flavour in the cup.

What roast date can I expect on my order?

Like everyone, we love to brew a new coffee as soon as it arrives; so, to make sure your coffee is properly rested and ready to brew, we store the beans in the roastery for at least a week before we send them to you. Roast dates on your order will reflect this and, the good news is, your coffee will be tasting great from the moment it arrives!

Brewing

How do you brew light roast coffee for filter?

When brewing our light coffee for filter, we recommend experimenting with a slightly higher water temperature, a slightly larger dose and a slightly longer brew time. These adjustments support better extraction and will, hopefully, draw out more of the amazing flavours from within our coffees. If you're having any trouble with the brew, get in touch - we'd love to help you get the most out of your coffee!

How do you brew light roast coffee for espresso?

When brewing our coffee for espresso, we recommend experimenting with a slightly higher water temperature, a slightly higher dose, and an input:output ratio of between 1:2.5 and 1:3. At Bryte, we put 19g of ground coffee in and get 50g of espresso out, over a pull of 28 to 33 seconds. We adjust our grind size to ensure we're within this timeframe. If too fast, we grind finer to avoid shots that are sour and lack sweetness; if too slow, we grind coarser to avoid bitter or hollow flavours. If you're having any trouble with the brew, get in touch - we'd love to help you get the most out of your coffee!

Do you have brew guides?

Not at the moment but we’re working on it! If you’d like to find out how to make coffee in your favourite style, a quick search on Google or YouTube will lead you to plenty of outstanding brew-related content.

Storage

How do I keep my coffee fresh?

As soon as you receive your coffee in the post, we recommend decanting it into an airtight container, and storing this somewhere dark and cool. Kept in this way, our coffee will remain drinkable for several months but will definitely taste at its best when consumed within 4-5 weeks.

Packaging

Is your packaging fully recyclable?

Yes - every box, bag, label and card can be put in your curbside paper-card recycling stream!

Does this mean your packaging is 100% plastic-free?

Sadly, no. Even though we’ve removed the hard-to-recycle plastic zips and valves, we have not been able to remove the thin layer of polyethylene on the inside of our bags. This layer not only seals the edges of the bag but supports the bag to be food safe.

Can the bags be recycled with the polyethylene layer?

Yes, absolutely - it’s such a thin layer that it breaks down quickly and naturally in the recycling stream.

Will you ever be 100% plastic-free?

Honestly, we hope so and we’re going to keep working hard on finding a fully plastic-free solution for our coffee bags.

Shipping

When will my order be shipped?

We aim to ship orders within three working days of the order being placed, using Royal Mail’s Tracked 24 or Tracked 48 services.

Do you ship to the EU and the rest of the world?

Apologies - not at the moment.
